Behaviour support can have a big impact on people with disability, their friends and carers
Did you know that you can get behaviour support for someone that you care for with a disability?
Of course, not every person with disability needs behaviour support, but where it is needed, behaviour support can make a big impact on your relationship with the person with disability and on your energy as a carer.
Our Behaviour Support Program creates tailored strategies that are responsive to the individual needs of the person receiving support. Strategies aim to reduce the occurrence and impact of concerning behaviours and to decrease the need for and use of restrictive practices.
Just as important to us is that while supporting behaviour change, we are also supporting the dignity and quality of life for the person requiring support.
We begin with a Behavioural Support Assessment carried out by our experienced Support Co-ordinators. The Assessment allows us to better understand the reason for the behaviour and what the person is trying to communicate through their behaviour. Once we have gathered information from the person with disability, their family and other relevant sources, we will develop tailored strategies to better support the client. Strategies could include a Positive Behaviour Support Plan and/or a Skills Development Plan.
Plans will identify:
- How to best support the person
- How to lessen the need for the person to engage in behaviours of concern
- Ways to respond safely if the person does use behaviours of concern
- Any skills the person may need to learn to replace any behaviours of concern
Where needed, our experienced Support Co-ordinators can provide access to:
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Pathology
- Psychology
- Counselling
